Great Guinea Success!!
Our very first group of Guinea Fowl were harvested last week. It went well, with only a few hiccups.
The night before, I arrived at the ranch around 10pm to fence everyone in and there was not a Guinea to be seen!! Yup, everyone broke their 9pm curfew! Did they know what was coming?
At around 11pm, 4 Guineas sauntered in from the field and set up in their coop to roost for the night. I walked around the yard with a flashlight calling for the others, but no luck so I went to bed. At around 12:30, I was awoken by another Guinea who had made their way home and was looking to join up with the others in the coop. He didn’t make it easy for me. But I grateful that I can now add chasing and corralling squawking birds, at 1am, in my pyjamas, to my list of skills.
I was awakened in the morning by the last Guinea calling to its friends from outside of the fence. They were all home now. I let him in and for the last time, closed up the fence, and called Rob to say the sooner the better, before we loose them again.
During the harvest, 2 birds flew away and did not return until that evening, at which time, we got the opportunity to practice the harvesting process all over again.
In the end, it was all very worth it. Our family has a passion for food, and it had been awhile since we had tried something new. The Guineas did not disappoint - prepared very simply with basic seasoning, the meat was melt in your mouth moist, with a hint of flavor that distinguishes Guinea Fowl from chicken or turkey.
So Guineas are on the plan for next year. If you are interested in getting on our 2023 Guinea list, email me and I will add you on.
Amazing food, family and friends - what more can you ask for?
