More chicks, getting online and the snakes made me do it.
This week we welcomed another 100 chicks to the ranch! Our last batch of meat birds sold out fast. So don’t wait any longer, if you want to get your hands on one (or a few), head to our online store https://www.borealranch.ca/store and put down a deposit.
It was a pretty easy process getting these little guys here safely (3rd time is a charm!!). These sweltering temperatures have presented us with the new challenge of trying to keep these guys from turning into chickens nuggets. That is, except for last night, where we had the heaters and heat lamps going in the brooder as the temperatures dropped to what felt like single digits. (I am writing this under a cloudy, gloomy sky, wearing slippers, enjoying a hot coffee, with the fireplace going - good old Manitoba weather!!).
Our market garden is in full swing and thriving thanks to this heat and our awesome water setup! Our online store is updated with the veggies that are ready to harvest, and cucumbers, beans, tomatoes and peas won’t be too far behind.
So we are super excited to announce our online Farmer’s Market!
Here is how it works:
1) Product inventory will be updated on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
2) Place your online order before (click here) Thursday midnight or Saturday midnight.
3) Pick up your order on either
Fridays, between 3pm and 7pm at the Ranch
Sundays, between 3pm and 6pm at Wendigo Road and Old Pointe Road
A super easy, guaranteed way to get your fresh veggies, farm fresh eggs and meat.
In addition to the newsletter, we are also expending our online presence with Facebook! Click here to friend us.
And we finally got the garden shed organized and cleaned out. (Although not by choice).
This shed has given us 15 good years which includes a journey from Sanford to the ranch. I have vivid memories of Rob and I hand bombing this shed off of a flat bed trailer at 11pm on a cool November night (I know, super romantic, right??). I have a vision for this shed that includes paint, signage and a chandelier, but clearly that is not the priority right now.
It wasn’t the frustration of having to lug everything out of the shed to access the broadfork or waste 15 minutes searching for the hand pruners that forced me to get this organized . It was this:
I was having one of those mornings where you wake up early, not tired, with the energy to tackle a big project. At 5am, coffee in hand, ready to tackle the garden, I flung open the doors to my garden shed. As a started removing items out of the way so I could access my hoe, I heard a weird shuffling sound happening throughout the shed. I thought nothing of it, until I grabbed my seed box and found a hug snake coiled up in it. I screamed and the box dropped to ground. I said to myself, Megan, suck it up, you are a farm girl now. So I bravely started unstacking my rubbermaid totes. For each tote I removed, I found a snake coiled up on the lid. Afraid of what I would find if I removed anything else, I quickly scanned the shed floor and found 4 other snakes. I started breathing a bit heavier, but said to myself “I can do this”. It was the little snake up on the ledge, at the top of the shed wall, a foot away from my head, looking down at me that sent me over the edge (great, now they climb walls and I have to worry about them falling on my head, like a boa constrictor falling from a tree??). Tears streamed down my face, I slammed the door, left everything in front of the shed, ran to the house and went back to bed.
Rob arrived that afternoon, pulled everything out, plugged up the holes and helped me declutter and re-organize. Have not had a snake in there since.
I guess I still have some city girl in me….
Weird how sometimes you find motivation in the strangest places.
A happy customer!!!
